  • In the time of Lord William Bentinck, in 1829 AD, the practice of Sati was banned under Rule 17.
  • An attempt was made to abolish the Infanticide Practice (prevalent among the Rajputs and Bengalis in the 13th century) in Bengal in 1785 AD.
  • Indian thinker Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar worked tirelessly to improve the situation of widow remarriage. In 1855, Vidyasagar requested the British government to enact a law on widow remarriage.
